Ingredients
  

Dough
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 egg egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 teaspoons peppermint extract
  • 2.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • as needed red food coloring
  • as needed crushed candy canes for topping

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Cream butter and powdered sugar until fluffy. Mix in egg, vanilla, and peppermint extracts.
  3. Combine flour, baking powder, and salt; gradually add to wet mixture.
  4. Divide dough; color half with red food coloring. Roll into ropes, twist into candy cane shapes.
  5. Bake 10-12 minutes, cool slightly, then sprinkle with crushed candy canes.

For best results, chill the dough before shaping.
