Method
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Cream butter and sugar, then add egg and peppermint extract.
- Mix in flour and salt, then divide dough in half. Color one half with red food coloring.
- Roll each dough into 6-inch ropes, twist red and plain together to form candy canes, and place on baking sheet.
- Bake for 8-10 minutes, then sprinkle with crushed candy canes while warm.
- Cool cookies on a wire rack before serving.
Notes
For best results, do not overbake to keep cookies soft and chewy.
