Ingredients
  

Dough
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 egg egg
  • 1 teaspoon peppermint extract
  • 2.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon red food coloring
  • 1/4 cup crushed candy canes

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Cream butter and sugar, then add egg and peppermint extract.
  2. Mix in flour and salt, then divide dough in half. Color one half with red food coloring.
  3. Roll each dough into 6-inch ropes, twist red and plain together to form candy canes, and place on baking sheet.
  4. Bake for 8-10 minutes, then sprinkle with crushed candy canes while warm.
  5. Cool cookies on a wire rack before serving.

Notes

For best results, do not overbake to keep cookies soft and chewy.
