Dough
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 egg egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Cream butter and powdered sugar, then add egg and vanilla.
  3. Mix in flour, salt, and peppermint extract; divide dough and color one half red.
  4. Roll into ropes, twist to form candy canes, and place on baking sheet.
  5. Bake 10-12 minutes, then garnish with crushed candy canes.
